Comparable thin section(s)
Matrix
Oxidised red fabric; dark brown core and brown edge (PPL), black (XP).
Semi-heterogeneous matrix, non-calcareous with low optical activity.
- ca. 55-70%
Inclusions
Quartz (++; mono, poly, cf: r, medium to coarse sand, some weathering, ff: sr-sa, very fine sand, weathering, alteration, eq & el; bimodal), sedimentary rock detritus (+; possible quartz arenite, some slightly metamorf), chert/flint (+), muscovite mica (+-; cf & ff, eq & el), feldspars (+-; plagioclase, orthoclase, microcline: r, cf), amphibole/pyroxene (-; r, cf, weathered), O/Fe (+-), semiplastics/clay pellets (+-, iron-rich, one pebble size).
The coarse fraction consists of medium to coarse sand, the fine fraction consists of very fine sand. Grains are generally rounded to subangular. Bimodal, possible sand temper. Overall the fabric is very poorly sorted and poorly orientated, single to double spaced.
- ca. 20-30%
Voids
Small planar voids and larger vughs, well aligned parallel to the edge, no infill.
- ca. 10-15%
Diagnostic features
The fabric is characterized by a semi-heterogeneous oxidized matrix with low optical activity and moderate porosity. Dominant quartz inclusions with frequent sedimentary rock detritus and chert/flint, common feldspars, muscovite mica, opaques/iron oxides and iron-rich semi-plastics/clay pellets, and few amphibole/pyroxene. Bimodal, possible sand temper. Overall very poorly sorted fabric.
Additional information
Zone of densily packed cf quartz minerals, feldspar and mica with Fe-staining and Fe-rich matrix in between (close space). Possible relic of poorly mixed sand? Similar fabric as A0020.1, but higher firing temperature and coarser Fe content.
