Matrix
Oxidized red fabric; redbrown (PPL), brown (XP).
Semi-homogenous matrix, non-calcareous with low to medium optical activity.
- ca. 45-60%
Inclusions
Quartz (++; mono, poly, r-sr, weathering, alteration, cf: medium sand, ff: fine to very fine sand; bimodal), sedimentary rock detritus (+-; possible quartz arenite, possibly some low metamorphic), chert (+-), muscovite mica (+-; ff, el), feldspars (+; plagioclase, orthoclase: r, cf & ff), O/Fe (+), clay pellets (+-, iron-rich).
The coarse fraction consists of medium sand, the fine fraction varies from fine to very fine sand. Grains are generally rounded to subrounded. Bimodal, most likely natural. Overall the fabric is moderately to poorly sorted and orientated, single spaced.
- ca. 30-40%
Voids
Small planar voids and larger vughs, well aligned parallel to the edge, some infill.
- ca. 10-15%
Diagnostic features
The fabric is characterized by a semi-homgenous oxidized matrix with low to medium optical activity and moderate porosity. Dominant quartz inclusions with frequent feldspars and opaques/iron oxides, common sedimentary rock detritus, chert/flint, muscovite mica, iron-rich clay pellets. Bimodal (natural). Overall moderately poorly sorted fabric.
Additional information
Possible red glauconite, difficult to distinguish from red iron oxides. Unidentified mineral: blue interference color in XP, no visible internal structure. Probably same fabric as A0020.2, but different firing.
