Matrix
Red-Ox layered fabric with browngrey core, red brown inner layers, browngrey outer layers and light brown slip; core to edge: brown - redbrown - dark brown - light brown (PPL), dark grey - dark brown - black - dark brown (XP).
Semi-homogenous matrix, non-calcareous with low to medium optical activity.
- ca. 60-70% //
[Slip]: Semi-homogenous matrix, non-calcareous with low optical activity.
- ca. 50-65%
Inclusions
Quartz (++; mono+, poly-, weathered and altered, cf: r-sr, fine to coarse sand, ff: sr-sa, very fine to fine sand, naturally bimodal), sedimentary rock detritus (+; quartz arenite), chert (+), flint (+), low grade metamorphic rock (+-), possible high grade metamorphic rock (-), feldspars (-; plagioclase, r-sr, cf), muscovite mica (+; eq & el, cf & ff), O/Fe (+), semi-plastics (-).
The coarse fraction consists of fine to coarse sand, the fine fraction consists of fine to very fine sand. Grains are generally rounded to subangular. Overall the fabric is very poorly to poorly sorted and poorly orientated, single to double spaced.
- ca. 20-25% //
[Slip]: Quartz (++; mono+, poly-, sedimetnary rock detritus (+-; possibly quartz arenite), r-sa, weathered and altered, coarse silt to fine sand, medium sand outlier), muscovite mica (+; eq & el), O/Fe (+), possible burned out organic matter (-).
Grains are generally rounded to subangular, ranging between coarse silt and fine sand. The overall fabric of the slip is moderately to poorly sorted, moderately orientated and single spaced.
- ca. 30-40%
Voids
Many small planar voids and few larger vughs, well aligned, no infill.
- ca. 10-15% //
[Slip]: Planar and channel voids from possibly burned out organic matter, well aligned, no infill.
- ca. 5-10%
Diagnostic features
The fabric is characterized by a semi-homogenous reduced-oxidised matrix with low optical activity and moderate porosity. Dominant quartz inclusions with frequent sedimentary rock detritus, chert, flint, muscovite mica and opaques/iron oxides, common low grade metamorphic rock detritus, and few possibly high grade metamorphic rock detritus, feldspars and semiplastics. Overall (very) poorly sorted fabric. The pottery has been finished with a slip layer on the exterior surfaces that is charcterized by a semi-homogenous matrix with low optical activity and moderately low porosity. Dominant quartz inclusions with frequent muscovite mica and opaques/iron oxides, common sedimentary rock inclusions, and few possible burned out organic materials. Overall moderately to poorly sorted fabric.
