Matrix
Reduced brown to dark brown fabric; dark brown (PPL), black (XP).
Semi-homogenous matrix, non-calcareous with no optical activity.
- ca. 35-45%
Inclusions
Quartz (++; mono, poly, weathering & alteration, cf: r-sr, fine to medium sand, ff: sr-sa, very fine to fine sand), sedimentary or low-grade metamorphic rock detritus (-), chert/flint (+-), feldspars (+; plagioclase, microcline, r, cf), muscovite mica (+; cf & ff, eq & el), glauconite (+-; r, cf & ff, red in PPL), O/Fe (+), semiplastics/clay pellets (+-, iron-rich).
The coarse fraction consists of fine to medium sand, the fine fraction consists of fine to very fine sand. Grains are generally rounded to subangular. Overall the fabric is poorly sorted and poorly orientated, single to double spaced.
- ca. 40-50%
Voids
Many small planar voids and few larger vughs, well aligned parallel to the edge, no infill. Drying cracks in and around semiplastics/clay pellets.
- ca. 15-20%
Diagnostic features
The fabric is characterized by a semi-homogenous reduced matrix with no optical activity and high porosity. Dominant quartz inclusions with frequent feldspars, muscovite mica and opaques/iron oxides, common chert/flint, glauconite and semiplastics/clay pellets, and few sedimentary or low grade metamorphic rock detritus. Overall poorly sorted fabric.
