Matrix
Reduced brown core, dark brown edges and a thin exterior redbrown layer on one side (possible oxidized finish); brown to dark brown (PPL), dark brown to black (XP).
Semi-homgenous matrix, non-calcareous with no to medium optical activity (reduced vs oxidized).
- ca. 35-50%
Inclusions
Quartz (++; mono, poly, r-sr, silt - fine sand, weathering, alteration), sedimentary rock detritus (+-), muscovite mica (+; el, ff & cf), feldspars (+-; plagioclase, orthoclase: r, cf), glauconite (+; r, cf), pyroxene (--), O/Fe (+), semi-plastics/clay pellets (+; iron-rich inclusion-poor).
The coarse fraction varies from coarse to fine sand, the fine fraction from very fine sand to silt. Grain are generally subrounded to rounded. Overall the fabric is moderately sorted.
- ca. 40-50%
Voids
Small planar voids and larger vughs with good alignment parallel to the edge, no infill. Drying cracks in and around semi-plastics/clay pellets.
- ca. 10-15%
Diagnostic features
The fabric is characterized by a semi-homogenous red-ox matrix with low to medium optical activity and moderate porosity. Dominant quartz inclusions with frequent muscovite mica, glauconite, opaques/iron oxides and semi-plastics/clay pellets, common sedimentary rock detritus, feldspars, and rare pyroxene. Overall poorly sorted.
