sample from almost complete mortarium Wilson type 2697 variant, with trituration grit; the form of this Verulamium white ware mortarium is close to that of Wilson (1984) type 2697, which is the last mortarium in the series from the excavations conducted by Frere in Verulamium, and dated c. AD 280-360; cf. Tomber & Dore 1998
